Frequently Asked Questions

What is New Leash on Life?

Our mission is to build a 16 thousand+ square foot, state-of-the-art No-Kill Pet Adoption and Resource Center in Crown Point, Indiana.

What is a “Pet Adoption and Resource Center”?

New Leash on Life will be a No-Kill Animal Shelter, but it will also be so much more! Offering indoor/outdoor dog kennels and cat patios (catios 😸) that encourage the public to visit and relax with the animals, low cost spay/neuter services, a pet food pantry, and more, New Leash on Life will be a welcoming public space focussed on bettering the lives of pets and pet owners.

Where will the shelter be located?

The shelter will be built within Crown Point, Indiana city limits. We are currently working with the local government and other members of the community to identify and secure a prime location for the shelter’s construction.

Will the shelter be “no-kill”?

Yes, New Leash on Life is being designed as a no-kill shelter. We plan to take all necessary steps to find placement for our animals. No animals will be euthanized because of pet overpopulation. In cases involving severe medical or behavioral issues, all animals will be evaluated individually by veterinary professionals to ensure appropriate actions are taken with the animals’ best interest in mind. Our shelter will meet the “no-kill” designation based on the 90% live release rate standard set by Best Friends Animal Society.

Doesn’t Crown Point already have a shelter?

Crown Point is currently home to the only Lake County animal shelter. Due to capacity constraints, intake is largely restricted to animals found outside city limits.

What size will New Leash on Life be?

Based on the needs assessment conducted for Crown Point, IN, and surrounding areas, which looked at the community’s projected need across the next ten years, the facility will be at least 16,000 square feet and capable of sheltering at least 76 adoptable dogs and cats as well as additional small companion mammals.

What types of animals will New Leash on Life service?

We will provide humane treatment to dogs, cats, and exotic companion mammals – such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

What capabilities will New Leash on Life have to accept animals?

New Leash on Life will be able to accept unhoused pets found throughout the community as well as surrenders from owners no longer able to care for their animals. We will be partnering with local first responders to design a dedicated space that can provide shelter to animals suffering from crises such as house fires or car accidents.

What makes New Leash on Life state-of-the-art?

New Leash on Life will be completely unlike the dog pounds of old. The living spaces of the animals will be designed to promote animal welfare and adoption. There will be community spaces to provide education, training, and assistance to the community and their pets. We have also identified other partners in the community; for example, the St Jude House would rely on us to provide temporary housing to animals of abuse victims, and local retirement communities have expressed interest in partnering our senior animals with senior citizens to provide companionship within their communities.

Will New Leash on Life cater exclusively to Crown Point, Indiana?

We are already exploring opportunities to partner with other local governments to accept their unhoused animals. Ultimately the decision will depend on negotiations between municipalities, but we hope New Leash on Life can be a resource to as many citizens as possible in South Lake County.

Are you currently accepting physical donations?
